The Reverend Louis
Flocken was Pastor of the Methodist Church for
about ten years. He left Willimantic in 1913
after being promoted to District Superintendent
of the Methodist Church. Flocken was a camera
buff and a photographer and during his time at
the church in Willimantic he gave many
photo/slide presentations. In November, 1912, he
gave a lecture at the church’s Mens Club
meeting. It featured about 125 slides he had
taken over the past 4 years of what he noted as
“improvements” in the City and included photos
of several buildings under construction. In that
time, many new buildings had been or were being
erected in the City. Some of the major projects
included
Mill 6 (1908), New
Armory (1909),
Willimantic Machine Company
(Roselin) (1910), Windham Silk Company (1910),
Addition to original WHS (1910),
Rossie Velvet
(Work
on the South Park Street plant began in February
1911 and was completed by June 1911),
Clark Block Church Street (1911),
Gem Theater (opened
on September 25, 1912),Saint Paul’s Church (dedicated
on May 30,1913),YMCA (dedicated 1913). The
newspaper article mentioned app. 125 slides. I
had access to 80 of them which I digitized and
colorized. Hopefully, someday, maybe the other
app. 45 will be found. |
