On Sunday, June 27, 1953,a huge Civil Defense exercise that involved 1400 firefighters  from New London, Middlesex and Tolland counties also participated in what was known as "Operation Willimantic Plan".

 

These photos showing ladder work with groups of people watching were taken on the North Street side of the Brand Rex building.

Another part of the day's exercises was relay pumping from the pumping station up to Ash Street (about 2 miles) and some hose training at the same time


 

The parade and an "air demonstration" was held after the parade as the firefighters went to the Elks Home for refreshments.
