Willimantic Trust Company

Where was the Willi Trust bank building back in the early 1950s? In poking through the attic I found some old cancelled checks from that time, along with some vintage "bank by mail" envelopes, not too much different from those that are used today, almost 50 years later. I still have an account at Fleet Bank but it just isn't the same as the old Willi Trust...

The Willimantic Bank & Trust Co. was on Main Street, just east (?) of the old Hurley's Men's store location, Railroad Street, the footbridge, etc., almost opposite the Church Steet intersection, about where Union Street split off of Main Street. I opened my first checking account there just before heading off to college.

I still have an old savings passbook that the teller use to write the entry in and many of the entries are for 25 cents or less.

You probably need to find out the name of the banking institution that took over the Wmtc trust and I would assume they have a record of all deposits on hand. I believe banks are required to maintain unclaimed deposits for some time and attempt to find the rightful owner.

Didn't it become Independent Bank & Trust before Fleet bought it?

Yes it did; I remember because when I got my appointment to the postal service in 1985, the first thing I did was to open a checking account at the branch by the footbridge. I think it was also briefly United Bank & Trust. Willi Trust ceased to exist about 1981.

RD I checked with Fleet Bank and they sent me to the State of CT. The clerk that I talked with advised me that they have no records of my account. I guess they need it more than I do.

Ernie--Just as a matter of principle I would followup on what they did with your account. If you had $$ in the account I believe the bank is required by state and federal regs to maintain it for a number of years. There must be a state banking commission or similar in Hartford that oversees state banks and maybe they can advised. Good luck--sounds like a great treasure hunt!!
