town Christmas tree

Where exactly was the "town Christmas  tree" that was lighted and caroled around before that of the Baptist Church was established! Seems like it was right outside the Wmtc Trust Co windows! I remember big show one very cold year when Herb Rice "organized" be celebration! Tim Quinn and high school choir sang, etc! Didn't have fence around the tree back then and you went downtown on Thursday nights-to the Trust Co and to shop in those shoe stores and enjoyed fellow shoppers and the local merchants! Even enjoyed the snow that was on sidewalks! Now that would be an old-fashioned Christmas-Wmtc style!

As I recall, the Christmas tree was on a little traffic "island" on Main St. where Union St. branched off. That would place it in full view of the Wmtc Trust Co windows.

Yes it was. At the junction of Union and Main sts there was a Gulf service station and the tree was out in front of it.

Just south of Railroad street, at the "Y" there was a gulf Gas station there at one time. I seem to remeber as a child the Town tree being there, and we even called it a christmas tree.

HERE AGAIN! WAS THINKING ABOUT WHAT WERE CALLED STREET DECORATIONS OVER MAIN STREET-SOMETHING LIKE SALAD GREENS AND TOMATOES AS I REMEMBER IN THE 50s/60s! WHAT DO YOU HAVE NOW? OH, THINK YOU HAD PROVERBIAL LITTLE WHITE LIGHTS IN THE PLAIN TREES I THINK THEY'RE CALLED! SO WHAT DO YOU HAVE NOW TO GO WITH THOSE RED BRICK SIDEWALKS? HEARD SOME THING REPEATED ABOUT WILLIMANTIC'S FLOWER BRIDGE? WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT?

Remember Del Boucher's display of the doll playing the organ and all the flowers inside his sunporch at Lewiston & North! Lots of people had what I call "italian bakery lights" - you know all colors everywhere! What else is to be remembered? Luv to all - wish it was all back!

I REMEMBER THOSE "SALAD GREENS", MORE RECENTLY THEY HAD SOME GILTZ ATTACHED TO BUILDING CORNERS! IF YOU HAD TO WAIT AT RED LIGHT YOU NOTICED AND WONDERED IF THIS WAS-MAYBE SOMETHING LEFT OVER FROM SOME OTHER HOLIDAY! NO REASON TO GO TO MAIN STREET SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE THERE THIS YEAR! USED TO BE LOTS OF HOUSES WITH WINDOW LIGHTS! WCMP HAD BIG STAR! ELKS LODGE HAD MANGER SCENE!

Does the Elks lodge still have the childrens Christmas Partys each year. I remember them well. Santa would come and give us all a gift, and the kids woiuld run around and eat and generally make noise. I do not remeber if the bar was open during those partys, but I would assume back then (50's and 60's) that it was.

I always knew Xmas season had arrived when we headed over to Pleasant Street to see the holiday presentation of the Jesus in the Manger scene. It was the event in town that said " Xmas is here"

Where is it today??? Why did the Elks stop festive tradition??

We used to sit in my pop's car with the heating whirring and look at that scene and pause to say to everyine in the car ....." Merry Christmas"

Lets see, Hmmm could it be that putting up a nativity scene is a capitol crime now adays, that people spend more time looking for ways to be offended they do anything else. Could it be the elks is afriad of law suits from those that scream they want tolerance, but have no toerance for anyone else. Could it be that its almost illegal to call a cristmas tree , a christmas tree, sans the holiday tree? Could it be that the minority is protected whie the majority suffers?

hello lenny:

you make every bit of sense sir, and i could not agree more. and i am sure many concur with us here.

they have lost their way in making politcal correctness and mind nazism the rule of the day. Many cannot simply think for themselves so they want someone else to do it. how safe....how convenient. how UN-AMERICAN.

it is a legacy from the clinton years!

where are the harry truman's???
