In Response To: TEACHERS (a)

I went to Natchaug graduated in 1953. The teachers I remember were Ruth Case, Mrs Willet, Mrs. Sternlieb, Elsie Erickson, Robert Perry (Principal)Mrs Hochberg,Mrs Donnelly, Mrs Schell. Also there was a janitor by the of Roy--big guy bald and loved the kids. Each Sept he would go around to classrooms and adjust the seats. If you remember all desks and seats were bolted to the floor. Also remember pledging the flag every school morning.

I graduated Natchaug with the great class of 1954. The other 7th grade teacher was Mrs. Macfarlane. There was also Miss Fatable (sp?) who taught second grade and later became Mrs. Lord (Mr. Lord taught science at WHS). I am surprised that you did not mention Betty Smith, Mr. Perry's secretary. I thought that all the guys noticed her!

I probably did notice her but time does strange things to the memory. I do remember Mrs. Macfarlane now that you mention her. I remember when Natchaug started serving hot lunches--not much to say about those. Use to up the street for a grinder--15 cents.

I forgot to mention one of my favorite teachers--Mrs. Selavka who taught fourth grade at Natchaug. I believe she also taught me in kindergarten when she was still Miss Conant. Also, Mrs. Podberesky came to Natchaug from Windham Center and taught 6th grade. When and what grade did Mrs. Sternlieb teach?

I believe I had Mrs. Sternlieb for 3rd grade. Also, had Mrs. Kitteridge for 2d; I think my 7th grade teacher was Bernice Shell. Mrs. Willet was 5th grade. When did Mrs. Selavaka teach at Natchaug?

I had Mrs. Selevka in 4th grade (1949/50), but I had had her in kindergarten before she was married, when she was Miss Conant. (I believe that she also had a sister who taught in Windham schools.) One of the things she did was have us come up to her desk individually for rapid arithmetic facts--timing us (with a stop watch) as we did one hundred simple addition, subtraction, multiplication facts. I also remember my love of poetry being reinforced by reading "Hiawatha's Sailing," an excerpt from Longfellow's "Song of Hiawtha" in the reading book I used in her class.

I was interested in your mention of Miss Sternlieb. She was/is a family friend and I had not realized that she had taught at Natchaug (which she had attended as a child!). Last night I spoke with her older sister and learned that she taught 3rd grade at Natchaug for one year immediately after graduating college and before leaving town to be married. She did have a long teaching career.

How about teachers from Windham High? Most of mine were veteran teachers with many years experience...something not always found in schools today. Miss Thompson, algebra teacher, very tiny but Very effective! Mr. Hunt, Miss Weathern and Miss MacKenzie {don't ask!}Principal Chester Nelson, who knew how to run a school! So many who devoted a lifetime to the profession. And somehow without all the "educational difficulties" of today, without all the alphabet soups of special programs, we all got through it! We certainly came away with an education.

Tom Lawson (Math and Guidance), Florence Nightingale (Latin), Thomas Callahan (Ancient History, Basketball coach), Mrs. Yates and Miss Gertrude Giroux (French), Stephen Tupper (Physics and Baseball coach), Mr. Goodwin (chemistry), Wayne Dudley (Geometry and feared Hall monitor). Did you ever have Mrs. Nelson for a substitute? I believe that she was Mr. King's sister. And of course, Zoloman Hunt who later was a regular at Lindy's and, I believe, courted Rose Haddad.
